Photographing My First Birth, A Quiet, Powerful Beginning
On Monday, I had the incredible privilege of photographing my very first birth, and it’s an experience I don’t think I’ll ever forget.
Birth photography is something I’ve felt drawn to for a long time. Not because it’s dramatic or intense, but because it captures one of the most meaningful times a family will ever experience, the moment they meet someone they have already loved for months.
Being invited into that space felt deeply personal. There is a level of trust involved that I don’t take lightly, and I felt truly honoured to be there, quietly documenting, observing, and preserving the beginning of a brand new life.
A Calm and Beautiful Experience
One of the things that surprised me most was how calm the environment felt. There was a steady rhythm to the room, soft voices, supportive hands, deep breaths, and moments of stillness between each wave of effort and anticipation.
Birth is often portrayed as chaotic or overwhelming, but what I witnessed was strength, connection, and an incredible sense of focus. It was powerful in the most gentle way.
When baby finally arrived, the room shifted instantly. Relief, joy, and emotion filled the space all at once, and those first few moments, the first cuddle, the first tiny stretches, the first quiet tears, are moments that pass in the blink of an eye, yet hold so much meaning.
The First Meeting
After the birth, I stayed a little longer to capture something equally as special, the siblings meeting their new baby brother for the very first time.
There is something truly magical about that moment. The curiosity, the excitement, the gentle little touches, the proud smiles, it’s the beginning of a lifelong relationship unfolding right in front of you.
These images, to me, are just as powerful as the birth itself, because they show the very first chapter of a growing family.
Why These Moments Matter
So much changes in the hours after a baby is born. Details fade quickly, the tiny wrinkles, the way their fingers curl, the expressions on everyone’s faces as they take it all in.
Photographing this experience reminded me again why storytelling photography matters so much. These aren’t just images; they are memories that allow families to return to the very beginning of their child’s story and feel it all over again.
Photographing this birth was an experience I will carry with me for a long time, and I feel incredibly grateful to the Clerkin Family who trusted me to document it.
